Neuro Note #1
An acquired brain injury (ABI) is classified into two categories, non-traumatic and traumatic. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is acquired from trauma or damage to brain and a non-traumatic brain injury (NTBI) is not caused by this. I chose to do my neuro note on this topic because I find it to be very interesting and every case is different. I recently watched the TV show Grey's Anatomy season 1 episode 4, which depicted a very unique TBI. This man had fallen down a flight of stairs and shot a nail gun into his head which ejected multiple metal nails through his skull and into his brain. The doctors of the show performed surgery and discussed the various outcomes that could go wrong in this situation. Miraculously, the man woke up and did not seem to have any side effects. However, depending on the nail placement in the brain, the man could have had a much different outcome. He may have lost his sight, memory, reflexes, or many other valuable qualities.
