Neuro Note #1

An acquired brain injury (ABI) is classified into two categories, non-traumatic and traumatic. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is acquired from trauma or damage to brain and a non-traumatic brain injury (NTBI) is not caused by this. I chose to do my neuro note on this topic because I find it to be very interesting and every case is different. I recently watched the TV show Grey's Anatomy season 1 episode 4, which depicted a very unique TBI. This man had fallen down a flight of stairs and shot a nail gun into his head which ejected multiple metal nails through his skull and into his brain. The doctors of the show performed surgery and discussed the various outcomes that could go wrong in this situation. Miraculously, the man woke up and did not seem to have any side effects. However, depending on the nail placement in the brain, the man could have had a much different outcome. He may have lost his sight, memory, reflexes, or many other valuable qualities. I chose to do my topic on this because even though this may have been a very "out of the ordinary" situation, things like this can happen and it was interesting to hear the many side effects or outcomes that could have happened in this case. This show depicts many medical situations and makes them very easy to learn about. I learned a lot about ABI's in lecture, but it is always helpful to see it in "real" situation. I am now able to picture this specific situation in my head, and remember what the characters said about possible deficits had the nails been inserted into different lobes or locations. Additionally, this will help me to remember the functions of each lobe. This show is on Netflix and ABC channel, and I highly recommend, specifically this very interesting episode.
